HS-03. Far From Home

USA, Feature Documentary, 2014, 74 min

?This Olympic dream might sound far-fetched, but Mawejje clearly eats far-fetched for breakfast.? ? ESPN

Born in Uganda into an abusive family, Brolin Mawejje held little hope for his future. His mother had left the family when he was two, and when he was 11 she miraculously reappeared with immigration papers for Brolin to join her in Boston. But the move was wrenching, and he was bullied in his American school for his poor English. His life would change forever, though, when he joined an after-school ski and snowboard program. Now at 20, Brolin is one of the top snowboarders in the U.S., and he has two obsessions: to be the first snowboarder to represent an African country in the Winter Olympics and to simultaneously pursue a career in medicine. Far From Home shows the remarkable impact a caring community can have on an individual to defy the odds and make dreams a reality.
