CH-09. Finding Oscar

USA/Guatemala/Canada, Feature Documentary, 2016, 94 min

This electrifying documentary, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, was the buzz at Telluride 2016. In 1982, President Reagan visited General Rios Montt, the brutal dictator of Guatemala installed by the CIA. That same month, Rios ordered the annihilation of the entire town of Dos Erres (population 250); his troops killed every man, woman and child, throwing their bodies down the town well. (According to forensic pathologists, most of the children were thrown into the well alive.) There were two witnesses, two four-year-old boys who were taken home and raised by two soldiers. Where were these boys now? Thus began a dangerous, 20-year detective story by Guatemalan Human Rights agencies, which were under death threats, to find these two witnesses.
