Jimi Hendrix was proud of his Cherokee grandmother, and Mohawk guitarist Robbie Robertson (The Band) remembers being told in the ’50s when he started out in rock ’n’ roll: ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├àΓÇ£Be proud you’re an Indian, but don’t tell anybody.├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬¥ The film’s title comes from Shawnee guitarist ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├àΓÇ£Link├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬¥ Wray, Jr.’s 1958 seminal guitar instrumental ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├àΓÇ£Rumble,├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬¥ in which he pioneered techniques which became rock ’n’ roll staples for bands as diverse as The Who and the Ramones. Vocalist Mildred Bailey from the Coeur d’Alene tribe, was one of the first improvisational jazz singers in the ’20s, and contributed greatly to the foundations of swing music. ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├àΓÇ£I was completely influenced by Mildred Bailey,├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬¥ remarks Tony Bennett in the film. Rumble is about the role of Native Americans in popular music history, and tells the story of a profound and missing chapter in the history of American music.
