CH-02. The Silence of Others
Spain / USA, Feature Documentary, 2018, 96 min
Winner at the International Documentary Association, Berlin and many other film festivals
Having seized power in a military coup, Francisco Franco Bahamonde’s brutal nationalist regime in Spain cracked down on all opposition with mass arrests, prison camps, torture and execution. Hundreds of thousands of people died, including babies taken from their mothers for Franco's eugenics program. To avoid civil war after Franco's death in 1975, Spain's new liberal democracy passed an amnesty law for all of Franco's murder squads. Recent attempts to change the law resulted in loud, nationalist “Make Spain Great Again” demonstrations, but a determined group of Spanish senior-citizen victims throws a sucker punch by launching a landmark case to make arrests under international law. Will they find justice after all these years? Subtitled.
