It was a time of great joy for young Chinese artists like Ai Weiwei, now one of the most famous artists on earth. Mao had died in 1976, and the Chinese government relaxed its brutal repression of art for a time. Artists began posting their new art on the “Democracy Wall,” paintings and writings that championed individuality and free expression, often exposing the inhumanity of the Cultural Revolution. Recording it all was a daring young filmmaker, Chi Xiaoning. Hidden for decades, footage from these brave acts of rebellion can now be experienced for the first time. Subtitled.
