GC-06. Balandrau: Hell Frozen Over

Spain, Feature Documentary, 2021, 80 min

An astonishing look at a little-known story that, during the end of 2000, changed the history of the Pyrenees forever. Cineuropa

December 30, 2000, two o'clock in the afternoon, was the start of the most terrible meteorological episode ever recorded in the Pyrenees, catching day hikers and skiers completely off guard and plunging them instantly into the most terrifying and deadly situation of their lives. Within minutes, hurricane-force winds moved a monster of cold and snow to Balandrau Mountain, turning it into a deadly trap for three nights. This film is a portrait of the tragedy, narrated in first person by survivors and by those who risked their lives in the rescue operation. Balandrau: Hell Frozen Over features personal and moving reflections by those who did survive, and their rescuers, who still live with guilt and sadness at having lost close friends and partners on that fateful day. Subtitled.
