GC-05. The Sanctity of Space

USA, Feature Documentary, 2021, 102 min

Lured by a 75-year-old black-and-white photograph, three renowned climbers pursue the ultimate adventure and show us why humans must explore. The Sanctity of Space follows climbing friends Renan Ozturk, Freddie Wilkinson and Zack Smith as they retrace the steps of legendary mountaineer, explorer and photographer Bradford Washburn, who pioneered the use of aerial photography in the mapping of mountaineering expeditions (and whose wife Barbara was the first woman to summit Denali). Inspired by Washburn’s enormous climbing-route photographs of Alaska’s Denali National Park from the 1930s, this remarkable film weaves Washburn’s extraordinary story with the trio’s obsession to traverse the Moose's Tooth massif, which contains some of Alaska’s most forbidding peaks.
