…one of the gods…
Martin Scorsese
Agnès Varda helped start the French New Wave of cinema in the ‘50s: films with deeply personal themes that were shot on very low budgets. Often filmed in the director’s own apartment and neighborhood, and with mobile shots sometimes made by the director sitting in a shopping cart holding a camera, the French New Wave started a revolution in film that is still felt today. Viva Varda! reveals a brand new perspective on the influential filmmaker's life and work, with never-before-seen archive footage and illuminating interviews with her family, friends and collaborators. One of Varda’s last films, Faces Places (BIFF 2018), went on to be nominated for an Oscar, making Varda the oldest person in history to be nominated for a competitive Academy Award.
