Sugar and Stars

France, Feature Film, 2023, 110 min

… a sumptuous and autobiographical (film) that rises up like a tasty soufflé. Impulse Gamer

Based on a true story. Yazid has one big passion: pastry making. Raised between foster homes and group homes, he gets his first job in the back of a commercial kitchen, where he runs into Islamophobia and is constantly threatened to be fired over the tiniest infractions. But he blindly soldiers on, believing…improbably...that it is his destiny to become a great pastry chef. Yazid steals ingredients to create a Black Forest gâteaux from scratch to keep his internship, and continually encounters nemeses, betrayals and setbacks. This film’s camera lovingly pans Yazid’s ever-more-spectacular desserts, cakes and ice sculptures, until he is frantically preparing to compete in the grandest of all of France’s baking championships. Warning: Don’t come to this film with an empty stomach. Subtitled.
